- This course is an introduction to the experience of listening to music intelligently, with an awareness of rhythm, melody, harmony, timbre and form, as well as with an historical perspective of Western European music from 900 to the present. Audio recordings and live performances are used to study the evolution of Western classical styles and genres such as opera, symphony, concerto, and chamber music, as well as jazz and rock. Some comparison of Western musical traditions with those of other cultures will be included. CSU, UC
